This year’s Solstice event marked a decisive turning point. Now feature-complete, Swarm is ready for its next chapter: delivering on its promise to become the backbone of Web3.
2024: Group functionality completed
The past year has been a landmark one. Feature completeness had several breakthrough implementations. Erasure coding proved to be a game changer, ensuring data redundancy and resilience, allowing data to be rebuilt even if part of it is lost. Fully decentralized price oracles established a fair and transparent price system that autonomously balances supply and demand without the intervention of a central authority.
Other significant achievements include the Access Control Trie (ACT) for enhanced privacy, doubling of reserves for improved node operator rewards, and GSoC opening possibilities for multi-user applications like forums and social media platforms.
2025 Cohabitation: Bigger, Faster, Stronger
At the start of the upcoming 2025, Sándor A. Nagy, the new Chief Operating Officer of the Swarm Foundation, outlined an ambitious roadmap focusing on three key areas:
User Experience,
Network Enhancement
Economic Model Enhancement
The foundation aims to make Swarm more accessible through multi-chain support and an in-browser client -- a potential game changer for adoption.
Key priorities for 2025 include:
Improved upload and download speeds
Blockchain Data Storage Support
Enhanced node operator rewards through improved bandwidth incentive mechanisms
Seamless availability of large datasets
Tools for tracking and recording data sources
Decentralizing decision-making through DAO**
Tracking AI data and streaming on Swarm
While Swarm's technology is groundbreaking, it will only become meaningful when brought into the real world by an active community. Therefore, towards the end of the event, the focus shifted to some of the most prominent ecosystem efforts.
The Swarm Foundation awarded two scholarships this year, Datafund and Solar Punk.
Datafund is developing a toolbox for sourcing data and models in decentralized AI with its scholarship, addressing the growing demand for transparency and trust in data sources and transformations. The goal is to create a toolkit for developers to easily include source code in applications and store data on Swarm.
Another scholarship, awarded to Solar Punk, has already supported three key libraries for audio and video streaming showcased at the Swarm Summit and Devcon, attracting partners interested in building new applications.
Ecosystem highlights showcasing real applications
The team behind the Fair Data Protocol (FDP) also demonstrated the ability to transform Web3 data flow by seamlessly connecting different dApps through shared storage. Data from one dApp can be easily transplanted into another and reused in different contexts. The key features of this new data flow are interoperability, privacy control, and a simplified user interface. Together, they form a framework for a more sustainable economic model where data owners retain control over their data and benefit from it.
GALAXIS introduced a framework for creating unstoppable online communities, leveraging Swarm's infrastructure to ensure communities remain fully in control and independent of third-party services. GALAXIS aims to be not just a platform, but a factory for creating truly independent online communities.
The illusion of cypherpunk is still alive
At the end of the event, representatives from Web3 Privacy PG and Mykola emphasized the importance of uniting different communities, chains, and layers around common privacy goals. With the support of the Swarm Foundation, their grassroots movement continues to educate builders and connect them, underscoring the necessity of providing uncensored storage for vulnerable communities.
As Swarm enters 2025, the focus shifts from technical completion to practical implementation, aimed at making decentralized storage accessible and useful for everyone. With a commitment to decentralization and a growing ecosystem of applications and tools, Swarm will become a pillar of the truly decentralized internet.
In honor of ldefenb: The legacy of knowledge sharing
The event pause was in memory of ldefenb, a passionate supporter of Swarm and an active community member, whose recent passing deeply affected the Swarm community. ldefenb embodied the spirit of Swarm through endless patience and helpfulness. 'Sharing knowledge' will be encoded in the welcome message of the next Bee version, while the team will ensure that OpenStreetMap (OSM) on Swarm, a project he built and maintained, will be preserved in the network in his memory.
