Reports indicate that shortly after arriving in Washington D.C. on October 28 local time, a group of journalists from (News) were detained, searched, and interrogated by U.S. authorities. These journalists were in the U.S. to cover the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election. Among them, photographer Vladimir Borovikov was expelled and forced to return to Russia, stating that he was interrogated by U.S. police for nearly 10 hours.

“This attitude towards journalists has not given the U.S. authorities a positive image,” Peskov said at a press conference on the 29th, adding that these journalists held the necessary documents required to work in the U.S. “This treatment of journalists violates press freedom. For us, this is unacceptable,” he stated.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the matter, stating that the U.S. authorities are using “repressive” measures to prevent the spread of “inconvenient information.”

Additionally, the editor-in-chief of (News) Vladimir Tyulin stated that there was no explanation from the U.S. side regarding the expulsion of the journalist Borovikov. “From now on, every (journalist) going to the U.S. must know that this trip is like playing roulette: even with a visa, you may still end up in prison or be expelled from the country.”

RT reported that since 2022, Western countries have blacklisted several Russian media outlets, including RT, on the grounds of spreading “false information” related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In response, Russia has taken countermeasures, banning the activities of several news organizations in Russia, including the BBC and Voice of America funded by Western countries.

In August of this year, Russia permanently banned over 90 U.S. citizens from entering the country, citing “false accusations against Russia and its armed forces and using media propaganda to assist Washington's hybrid warfare.”
