Amazon will cut up to 30,000 positions from its corporate workforce, starting Tuesday, as part of efforts to streamline operations and address hiring that ballooned during pandemic-era demand spikes.
This round of layoffs, which could affect nearly 10% of Amazon's roughly 350,000 corporate employees, stands as the largest in the company's history, according to Reuters.
The staff cuts will span multiple divisions, including human resources, operations, devices, and services. Over the past two years, Amazon has made incremental workforce reductions across several areas such as devices, communications, and podcasting.
CEO Andy Jassy is leading a broad restructuring drive aimed at reducing costs and simplifying Amazon's organizational hierarchy, which includes consolidating layers of management and promoting operational efficiency.
Jassy has previously flagged the growing use of AI as a key factor in reducing repetitive jobs.
The final number of affected employees could fluctuate, depending on Amazon's shifting financial priorities, with some reports indicating a possible 15% cut in the human resources division alone.

Amazon is once again redefining logistics. After moving from two-day delivery to same-day and even one-hour shipping, the tech giant is now testing AI-powered glasses for drivers and robotic arms designed to shave off precious minutes from every route.

AI Glasses Speed Up the “Last 100 Yards”
At its internal “Delivering the Future” event, Amazon publicly introduced its smart delivery glasses, codenamed “Amelia.”

These futuristic glasses feature a small heads-up display that shows turn-by-turn navigation, allows package scanning, takes delivery confirmation photos, and responds to voice commands.
According to internal testing, drivers using the glasses save up to 30 minutes per shift. The device connects to a small controller attached to the driver’s vest and is powered by swappable battery packs custom-designed by Amazon for long routes.
Beryl Tomay, Amazon’s Vice President of Transportation, explained that the glasses will replace bulky GPS terminals and enhance driver safety, eliminating the need to juggle both a phone and a package.
“The glasses keep drivers focused, reduce stress, and improve delivery accuracy,”

Tomay said.
Amazon emphasized that using the glasses will be voluntary, and they will be provided to drivers free of charge.

AI-Driven Logistics: From Van Scanners to Next-Gen Maps
Amazon is steadily automating every step of its logistics chain.

Last year, the company rolled out AI delivery van scanners that identify packages by projecting a green light, saving drivers time otherwise spent reading labels manually.
In June, Amazon also revealed new digital maps offering far more detailed neighborhood data, including building shapes and obstacles, outperforming even Google Maps in precision.
When paired with the smart glasses, these maps can guide drivers precisely to customers’ doors — offering directions such as which way to turn after leaving an elevator or how to avoid a client’s aggressive dog.

Blue Jay Robots Streamline Warehouses
Alongside the glasses, Amazon introduced a new robotic arm named Blue Jay, built to help warehouse staff pick and sort items faster.

The Blue Jay robot operates in a more compact space than previous models and helps reduce injury rates among workers.
Internal reports show that Blue Jay can increase order fulfillment speed by up to 25%, significantly improving delivery turnaround across Amazon’s global network.

Amazon Responds to a Wave of Tech Competition
The AI glasses debut comes just as Samsung launched its Galaxy XR headset, developed in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.

Priced at $1,800 — roughly half the cost of Apple’s Vision Pro — the device offers early buyers one year of free access to Google Gemini AI and YouTube Premium.
While rivals focus on immersive consumer experiences, Amazon is betting on practical AI tools that directly improve real-world logistics — turning futuristic concepts into operational efficiency.
