Trump Declares "Tariffs are Beautiful," Credits Them for U.S. Wealth in Fiery Remarks
In a robust defense of his economic policy, former President Donald Trump lauded import tariffs, calling them a "beautiful word" and the key driver behind America's financial strength.
"I love tariffs. It's such a beautiful word," Trump stated emphatically. "We are becoming the richest people in the world because of tariffs. We have made trillions of dollars."
The former president argued that abandoning this strategy would be catastrophic for the nation's treasury. He framed his tariff-centric approach as a necessary corrective to decades of perceived exploitation by other countries.
"If we ever dropped that," he warned, referring to the decision to levy taxes, "the money we have would never be there." He added, "Other countries have taken advantage of us for years. Now, we are treating them fairly."
Trump reminded the audience that reinstating what he called the "doctrine of reciprocity" was one of the very first executive orders he signed upon taking office, fundamentally centered on imposing import duties.
The legality of certain tariffs continues to be a point of contention, with a major case on the issue pending before the Supreme Court. However, Trump expressed unwavering confidence in the policy's financial payoff.
"The money that comes in from tariffs is something that we have never seen before," he claimed. Illustrating the scale of the revenue, he concluded, "It's enough to buy a lot of warships."
The remarks reinforce the protectionist trade agenda that is expected to be a cornerstone of his potential 2024 presidential campaign.
