In The Art of War, there are five matters, seven calculations, and twelve techniques:
"War is a matter of vital importance to the state, the province of life and death, the road to survival or extinction, it cannot be neglected."
"Therefore, it is examined through the five matters, compared with calculations, and its circumstances are sought: First is the Way, second is Heaven, third is Earth, fourth is the Commander, fifth is the Law.
"War is a matter of deception. ... Attack when they are unprepared, and emerge when they do not expect it."
Five Matters
The Way: Refers to the alignment of the ruler's and the people's goals, making the people willing to live and die with the ruler, without any divided hearts.
Heaven: Covers the climate and astronomical conditions such as day and night, sunny and rainy, hot and cold, and the four seasons.
Earth: Includes factors of terrain and landforms such as proximity and distance, danger and ease, and breadth and narrowness.
Commander: Requires the commander to possess five qualities: wisdom, trustworthiness, benevolence, courage, and strictness. Law: Involves regulations, systems, and organizational structures related to military organization, command signals, officer responsibilities, and the management of provisions and weapons.
Seven Calculations
- Who has the Way: Compare which ruler can gain the people's hearts more effectively, making the people united with the ruler.
- Who has the capable commander: Compare the abilities of the commanders on both sides.
- Who has Heaven and Earth: Measure which side can better occupy favorable timing and location.
- Which side's laws are more enforced: Judge which side's military laws are more rigorously enforced.
- Which side has stronger troops: Assess the combat effectiveness of both armies.
- Which side has better-trained soldiers: Examine which side's soldiers are better trained.
- Which side's rewards and punishments are clearer: Compare which side's rewards and punishments are more just and clear.
Twelve Techniques
The Art of War does not explicitly mention “twelve techniques,” but there are many tactical principles and methods, which can be summarized into about twelve, such as: Deceiving the heavens to cross the sea, besieging Wei to rescue Zhao, borrowing a knife to kill, waiting at ease for the labor, taking advantage of the fire to loot, feigning an attack in the east while striking in the west, creating something from nothing, secretly crossing the Chen Cang, watching the fire from the other side, hiding a dagger behind a smile, using a replacement strategy, and taking the sheep by the hand, etc. These tactics emphasize the flexible use of stratagems and strategies according to different situations, to achieve the goal of surprise and victory over the enemy.
