They reduce their capital weight while having fewer people left to hold on. In summary, holding on wears down your health, and cutting losses means losing money. Their game lasts for weeks or months, while I only catch a day or two, which is just bait for them.

Many people are still bullish on altcoins, to be honest, after the major crashes like the recent one, it will take at least 4-6 months for market makers to accumulate again as well as shake out the weak hands before pushing prices up. It's similar to a train that must slow down, come to a complete stop, and then gradually accelerate; it can't just stop and then take off immediately. And I believe that right now market makers will not push $ETH up immediately because pushing $ETH means they would have to push other altcoins up as well to take profits alongside ETH. But now that altcoins are probing for a bottom (panic selling), the answer is that it's not the right time yet.
