Unichain, an Ethereum $ETH
Layer 2 network launched by Uniswap Labs, has made history by becoming the first L2 chain to process blocks using a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) — a secure hardware solution long used outside of crypto. This advancement, powered by Rollup-Boost, a joint project from Uniswap Labs and MEV specialists Flashbots, promises to enhance scalability, security, and fairness in blockchain transactions.
What Is Rollup-Boost?
Rollup-Boost is middleware that shifts block sequencing from traditional centralized systems to a trusted hardware enclave, enabling auditable, transparent, and fair transaction ordering. Transactions are sequenced based strictly on priority fees within the TEE, helping mitigate the effects of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) — the often controversial practice where block producers reorder transactions for profit.
"In most rollups today, sequencing happens offchain and can’t be fully audited. TEE-based block building changes that,"Uniswap Labs noted in a blog post.
How It Works
The TEE used by Unichain runs on physical chip hardware, isolating critical processes from manipulation. Future upgrades like Flashblocks will further divide Unichain blocks into four fast 200-millisecond sub-blocks, speeding up transaction processing and reinforcing anti-MEV protections.
Part of the Optimism Superchain Vision
Unichain is part of the Optimism Superchain — an interconnected ecosystem of Layer 2s like Base (developed by Coinbase) and Ink (built by Kraken). Each is innovating independently while contributing to shared governance and infrastructure. For example, Base recently hit “Stage 1” decentralization, and Ink launched decentralized fault proofs.

“TEE-based block building is the next step toward further decentralization,” Uniswap Labs wrote. “Future upgrades like Flashblocks and the Unichain Validation Network will continue to push the boundaries.”
