#ETHRally Over the past fifty years, the people of Kalabagi in Sutarkhali Union, Dacope, have experienced significant changes in their livelihoods. In the 1970s and 1980s, rice farming, small-scale fishing, and the use of mangrove resources such as honey and fuelwood were the main sources of income. From the 1990s onwards, shrimp aquaculture expanded rapidly, replacing much of the rice land and reducing livelihood diversity. By the 2010s and 2020s, shrimp farming, migration, and small-scale trade had become the dominant income sources, while traditional products like Sundarbans honey, dry fish, and homemade pickles continued to exist but were sold mostly through local middlemen. This shift has made the community more vulnerable to environmental challenges like salinity intrusion, cyclones, and erosion, as well as fluctuations in shrimp prices. Despite producing unique and high-value goods linked to the Sundarbans, local producers have little access to wider markets, often selling at low prices without branding or direct consumer contact. Digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and websites now offer a powerful way to connect directly with buyers in cities and abroad. Through storytelling, product photography, and video demonstrations, producers can showcase the authenticity and quality of their products, building trust and recognition. Mobile payment systems make online sales practical and secure. Training the people of Kalabagi in content creation and online marketing would equip them to control their own branding, reach larger markets, and increase incomes, providing greater resilience and sustainable economic growth for the community.
