3/Reversible decision-making and irreversible decision-making
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos emphasized the essence of decision-making and divided it into two types: reversible and irreversible:
- Reversible decisions: should be made quickly by frontline teams to facilitate rapid progress. The point is not to let the decision-making process get in the way of action, but rather to adopt a trial-and-error approach to iteratively optimize the results.
- Irreversible decisions: need to be more cautious and require careful consideration. To avoid spending too much energy on disputes within the team, they should be reported to superiors in a timely manner so that decision-making power belongs to those with the most experience and judgment. This leader's role becomes especially important when faced with strategic choices that are not 100 percent certain of success. At the same time, we emphasize a culture of "disagree but commit", which is based on trust and respect. Even if there are disagreements, team members will fully support the decision and mobilize all available resources to implement and verify the chosen direction. This culture helps avoid mutual blame and ridicule after the decision-making results are released, and promotes overall cooperation and progress of the team.
Inspiration:
In daily life, the reversibility of decisions is often ignored and too much energy is spent on reversible decisions; insufficient energy is invested in irreversible decisions or no more experienced personnel are introduced.
