On Wednesday, Meta shook up the wearable tech world by unveiling three new AI-powered smart glasses. The biggest spotlight fell on the Ray-Ban Meta with an integrated augmented reality (AR) display – the first of its kind since the Google Glass era. Price tag? $799.
Classic Look, Futuristic Power
At first glance, the glasses maintain the iconic Wayfarer design. They look like regular sunglasses, but behind the stylish frame hide a camera, microphones, speakers, and a high-resolution color display. The screen only lights up when in use, capable of showing text, images, and even live video calls.
Meta pushed the boundaries further with the Neural Band wrist device, which detects forearm nerve signals and translates them into intuitive gestures – from simple swipes and taps to finger-drawn handwriting in mid-air.
“These are glasses that retain the classic Ray-Ban style, but they’re the first AI glasses with a high-resolution display powered by our neural band,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the reveal.
Calls, Chats, Translations, and Navigation – All Before Your Eyes
The Ray-Ban Meta can handle phone calls, send messages, and seamlessly integrate with WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram via Bluetooth. Key features include:
Live captions and translations during conversations
Navigation directions displayed directly in the lens
Music control and a camera viewfinder mode
A safety LED indicator signaling when the camera is recording
The glasses will hit U.S. stores on September 30.
Oakley Meta Vanguard: Built for Extreme Athletes
Alongside the Ray-Bans, Meta also introduced the Oakley Meta Vanguard, designed for thrill-seekers like mountain bikers and snowboarders. Launching on October 21 for $499, they cost $100 more than the Oakley Meta HSTN model released in June.
With a wraparound athletic design and vibrant curved lenses, the Vanguard also features a convenient button under the frame, making it easy for helmeted athletes to snap photos or record videos.
Through a collaboration with Garmin, the glasses can display live stats like pace, speed, distance, and heart rate. A subtle LED alert inside the lens signals when users hit preset milestones.
Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) for Everyday Wear
Meta also unveiled the second generation of Ray-Ban Meta, priced at $379 (up from $299 in 2023). The new model boasts double the battery life – up to 8 hours – and an upgraded 3K Ultra HD camera. These glasses are already available.
Expanding the VR Ecosystem
At the same event, Meta provided updates on its VR initiatives. Hyperscape Capture has entered Early Access, enabling users to scan a room in minutes and explore it as a highly detailed VR environment.
Meta also revealed its fall VR game lineup:
Marvel’s Deadpool VR
Star Wars: Beyond Victory
Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked
Reach
And to bolster its media offerings, Horizon TV is adding Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu to its library.
👉 Meta is making it clear that its vision for wearables and virtual reality goes beyond fashion – it’s about embedding AI seamlessly into daily life, from communication and sports to entertainment and gaming.
