🇨🇴 PRESIDENT PETRO: "THIS WAS THE BORDERS OF OUR COUNTRY WHEN GRAN COLOMBIA DISSOLVED"

📍 "Judge the lack of patriotism of the oligarchy that allowed a good part of our territory to be lost," declared Petro while sharing historical maps. Colombia has ceded 54% of its original territory since 1819 - more than half of the country was lost to Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, and Nicaragua.

The president directly attacked his predecessors: "In the governments of Uribe, Santos, and Duque, we were already losing territorial sea. Only this government managed to stop the loss of the sea." He refers to the 2012 Hague ruling that took away 43% of Colombia's Caribbean sea in favor of Nicaragua.

🗺️ The historical losses are shocking: with Venezuela, part of La Guajira, Maracaibo, and areas of the Amazon were lost. With Brazil, "unexplored" territories that Peru ceded illegally. With Ecuador, disputes since 1831. With Panama, the separation of 1903. The last major loss: 75,000 km² of sea in 2012.

The statement arises amid tensions with Peru over Santa Rosa Island in the Amazon. Petro accuses Lima of "occupying Colombian territory" and announced that he will commemorate independence in Leticia in response. Peru protested vigorously.

💬 Experts point out that Colombia lost territory due to "lack of political, maritime, and prospective vision" over 200 years. The oligarchy that Petro criticizes includes conservatives and liberals who governed since the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1831.
