Several Venezuelan non-governmental organizations warned this Thursday, July 31, about the "dismantling" of the electoral system following the presidential elections on July 28, 2024, in which the CNE, controlled by chavismo, proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner without publishing disaggregated results, which they qualify as an "express violation" of the law.
The Citizen Electoral Network (REC) reported that the National Electoral Council committed irregularities such as the omission of audits and non-compliance with post-election regulations. It also accused the state of violently repressing protests that arose due to the discrepancy between the official results and the data collected by the opposition.
The report warns about the increasing interference of figures like Jorge Rodríguez and Diosdado Cabello in the technical functions of the CNE, which would consolidate their subordination. The REC concludes that the country faces an authoritarian model where elections are used as a mechanism of control.
