-- Meta (NASDAQ:META) appointed Shingya Zhao as a principal scientist for Meta’s Super Intelligence Labs, according to an announcement from CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday.

In this new role, Zhao will set the research agenda and scientific direction for the lab, working directly with Zuckerberg and Alexander Wang. Zhao co-founded the lab and has served as a principal scientist since its inception.

Zuckerberg stated in his announcement: "Shingya has already made many breakthroughs, including a new model for scaling, and has proven himself as a leader in this field."

The officialization of Zhao's leadership position comes at a time when Meta is indicating success in its hiring and team-building efforts for the artificial intelligence division.

Meta's Super Intelligence Labs were created to enhance Meta's standing in AI development. The company has gathered talent by hiring researchers from competitors including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Meta also acquired Scale AI, leading to Wang joining to lead the group
