New executive order "Ending Vagrancy and Restoring Order" prohibits camping on the streets as if it were Coachella. Trump signed today the order that redirects federal funds to move homeless people to rehabilitation and treatment centers, especially those with mental illnesses or addictions.
💰 Mayors who do not cooperate could lose ALL their federal funding. The order prioritizes money for cities that enforce camping bans and programs that require sobriety. It also allows for longer forced hospitalization for those who "pose a risk".
The context is brutal: 771,480 homeless people in 2024, a record high. 274,224 literally living on the streets. An 18% increase since 2023. Trump blames Democrats for creating "uninhabitable nightmares" in the cities.
🏕️ The plan includes creating "tent cities" on cheap federal land with doctors, psychiatrists, and rehabilitation specialists. Those who refuse treatment could be arrested. It also prohibits sex offenders from being housed with children in shelters.
🤔 Critics say it is bold, but question: Where is all this people supposed to go? The "Housing First" approach of decades is being dismantled. Advocates warn that criminalization does not solve the underlying problem: the affordable housing crisis.
