Public Companies' Bitcoin Purchases Exceed ETFs for Three Consecutive Quarters
According to CNBC, as institutional investors continue to drive asset accumulation, public companies' Bitcoin purchases have exceeded exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for the third consecutive quarter.
In the second quarter of this year alone, public companies added 131,000 Bitcoins, increasing their holdings by 18%; while ETFs only increased their holdings by 111,000, up 8% year-on-year. This indicates that more and more companies are taking advantage of a more cryptocurrency-friendly regulatory environment to benefit from strategic positioning.
Nick Marie, head of research at Ecoinometrics, stated that unlike ETF investors, public companies purchase Bitcoin as a means to increase shareholder asset value, as they focus more on long-term growth and attracting more investors rather than short-term price fluctuations, and this trend is becoming a key driver of Bitcoin's development.
According to Bitcoin Treasuries data, public companies currently hold 849,245 Bitcoins, valued at over $90 billion, while private companies hold 290,878 Bitcoins, valued at approximately $31 billion. A total of 141 public companies and 42 private companies hold 5.7% of the circulating supply of Bitcoin, while ETFs and other institutional funds hold about 7%.
Analysts point out that this trend of corporate Bitcoin purchases may represent a temporary arbitrage opportunity, but as Bitcoin becomes increasingly mainstream and regulatory restrictions on direct cryptocurrency investments ease, this trend is expected to become the norm.
Meanwhile, Ethereum may become the next investment target for public companies due to its staking potential for additional returns. For example, Bitcoin network company BitMine plans to raise $250 million through a private placement to increase its Ethereum reserves as part of its financial strategy. Similarly, public gaming company SharpLink has also staked its $460 million worth of ETH to earn extra returns.
In summary, the proactive positioning of public companies not only shows their recognition of Bitcoin's long-term value but also indicates the potential role of cryptocurrency assets like Ethereum in corporate business strategies. Whether this trend will continue and how it will shape the future financial landscape is worth our close attention.
