Elon Musk furiously stated that he can no longer tolerate it, warning that unchecked government spending is leading America to catastrophic financial collapse and irreversible damage.
Elon Musk issued a sharp critique of the recently passed spending bill by Congress, calling it a "disgusting monstrosity" and expressing his frustration on his social media platform X. In a post that quickly gained popularity, Musk stated:
I'm sorry, but I can no longer tolerate this. This enormous, crazy, abuse-filled spending bill from Congress is a disgusting monstrosity.
"Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it," Musk added. His remarks were directed against the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', a sprawling tax and spending package supported by President Donald Trump that recently passed the House of Representatives and is now awaiting action in the Senate.
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that the bill will increase baseline deficits by $2.5 trillion over the next decade, or by $3.1 trillion with interest. If temporary provisions, such as the expanded child tax credit and tax benefits for tips and overtime, become permanent, the total debt increase could reach $5.1 trillion, including interest.
Musk added in a subsequent post: "This will significantly increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with an unsustainable debt." Furthermore, the billionaire wrote:
Congress is making America bankrupt.
Previously heading the Department of Government Efficiency ($DOGE ), Musk has repeatedly expressed his concerns about financial mismanagement. Recently, he announced the completion of his role as a special government employee, thanking President Trump and noting that the DOGE mission will continue within government operations. His comments sparked controversy in the broader discussion of federal spending. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt defended the legislation, calling it necessary to preserve tax benefits and support national priorities.
Many supported Musk's concerns. For example, Senator Rand Paul wrote on X:
I agree with Elon. We have both seen tremendous waste in government spending and know that another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake. We can and must do better.
