🟡What is this anyway?
• National debt is how much the US government has borrowed to cover the budget deficit. It rises when spending exceeds tax revenue.
• Currently, the debt has reached $36.79 trillion, of which about 30% is held by foreign investors, including Japan ($1.2 trillion) and China ($971 billion).
💸 Why is this important even for the crypto market?
• The larger the debt, the higher the interest rates on loans, including for companies and households around the world.
• The threat of default in the US is a shock to the entire global economy. Investors flee to safe assets — often this is gold and... bitcoin.
🧠 Historically, US debt has risen particularly sharply during crisis periods:
— The pandemic of 2020–2021
— Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
— Tax cuts under Trump
— And now: trade wars and rising defense spending
📌 The debt ceiling (a borrowing limit) has already been raised more than 100 times, the last being on January 2, 2025, to $36.1 trillion. But it will have to be raised again.
⚠️ What this means:
— Any issues with debt servicing could undermine confidence in the dollar
— In response, capital may rush into alternatives — gold, bitcoin, digital assets
— The higher the debt, the more important it is for the US not to lose investor confidence
