U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced that his country will accelerate Bitcoin (BTC) mining and that miners will reduce their dependence on the public grid by establishing their own energy facilities.
In a special interview featured in Bitcoin Magazine, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick discussed the vision for Bitcoin. Lutnick stated that thanks to the investment accelerator program initiated by the Department of Commerce on March 31, 2025, Bitcoin mining companies will be able to operate independently by establishing their own energy facilities and data centers. With this project, miners will be able to reduce their dependence on the public electricity grid by setting up their own power plants near natural gas reserves.
Lutnick stated that they consider Bitcoin to be a valuable commodity like gold, saying, "Bitcoin is a commodity and should be treated like oil and gold. Bitcoin is definitely not a currency." The Secretary also mentioned that Bitcoin could be included in the National Economic Accounts just like gold and that the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) might consider using Bitcoin in their calculations.
Emphasizing that the Bitcoin industry will receive significant support in the U.S., Lutnick stated, "The Trump administration believes in Bitcoin. The U.S. wants to provide the best business environment for Bitcoin, maximizing the success of the sector." Lutnick also mentioned that there was a negative approach towards the sector during the previous Biden administration, but that era has now closed forever.
"The U.S. never steps back from anything it has adopted. America has now become a Bitcoin country and there will be no turning back."
This step is crucial not only for increasing Bitcoin's economic value but also for reducing the environmental impacts of the mining sector and supporting the U.S. energy independence. The U.S. seriously considering including Bitcoin in its national economic plan could be an important turning point for cryptocurrencies.
