This 74-year-old man is going crazier and crazier! On April 21, he shouted on social media for the world to "band together against China," but no one paid any attention. He previously used "tax cuts" as bait to fool countries into decoupling from China, and even Japan directly rebutted him saying, "We won’t serve you." Seeing no one respond, he got anxious and turned to attack four ASEAN countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia, especially raising the tariff on Cambodia's solar products to a staggering 3500%—this is not tax collection; it's outright robbery!
But anyone with eyes can see that this 3500% exorbitant tariff is just a paper tiger meant to intimidate. Since June last year, the U.S. has almost eliminated tariff preferences for these countries. Cambodia's solar exports to the U.S. plummeted by 60% last year, leaving only $830 million, and raising tariffs further is just driving a few more nails into the coffin. This move by Trump is clearly to scare ASEAN countries into distancing themselves from China. However, the reality is hitting back hard; ASEAN isn't falling for it at all!
The most embarrassing is Vietnam. Just as the U.S. announced the tariff hike, China and Vietnam immediately conducted joint patrols in the Gulf of Tonkin, signing over 40 cooperation agreements in one day—this hardly looks like they were scared by the U.S.! Cambodia is even bolder, directly signing a major railway deal with China. Malaysia recently even established a visa-free agreement with China, and the Thai Prime Minister directly confronted the U.S.: "Do you want us to kneel down to make money? No way!"
If you ask me, Trump's old tricks are outdated. The whole world has realized that following the U.S. in confrontation means cutting off their own financial paths. The EU, Japan, and South Korea, these "old followers," have started to quietly communicate with China, fearing being dragged down by the U.S. If Trump continues this way, he might end up isolated, with even his own backyard catching fire!
Ultimately, China and ASEAN are genuine business partners, not something that can be torn apart by a few threats from the U.S. The more Trump swings the tariff club, the tighter everyone huddles together. In this day and age, who still believes in the nonsense of "America First"? Earning money together is the hard truth!
