A few days after Vitalik mentioned "L2 integration" in his Ethereum development goals for 2025 on January 23, Arbitrum's parent company Offchain has made another big announcement.#ETH#ARB #OP
Offchain wants to achieve interoperability between chains in the Arbitrum ecosystem, first integrating the entire Arbitrum chain into one chain, and then expanding to other L2s of Ethereum.
Regarding Arbitrum, there are One, Nova, and many other L3s such as Apechain, XAI, etc. The most commonly used one should be Arbitrum One.
For details, please see the previous tweets on Arbitrum and Optimism on my homepage.
1⃣Although Optimism has already achieved interoperability between Superchains, this time Offchain still gave two goals and a bigger picture for a specific time period:
1. Complete cross-chain transfers and swaps within 3 seconds by the end of the first quarter;
2. Complete cross-chain interoperability of all chains by the end of the third quarter;
3. We cannot be complacent and only consider our own interests. To achieve interoperability, Offchain will work closely with the Ethereum Foundation, leading L2 and interoperability protocol creators to ultimately achieve "access to one chain = access to the entire L2".
2⃣ Interoperability requires the following user experience:
1. Do not introduce new trust entities: Otherwise, too many trust entities will not conform to the core value proposition of blockchain
2. Cheap: The gas fee for cross-chain interoperability cannot be very high, otherwise it will greatly affect the user experience
3. Fast: The interoperable block confirmation must be completed before the Ethereum block confirmation, otherwise the slow speed will also affect the user experience
4. Unrestricted access: anyone can use interoperability
3⃣Offchain proposed to achieve interoperability through "intent" technology. In simple terms, intent is a tool protocol to achieve cross-chain and interoperability of assets. It is currently in the exploratory growth stage.
Arbitrum initially designed the intent into 4 modules:
1. Message passing standards: ERC-7683, ERC-7786 and ERC-7841 standards
2. Message broadcast standard: use a unified standard contract
3. Fast settlement: Fast withdrawals, third-party fast bridges, and upcoming native ZK integration
4. The information flow intended to be spread must rely on a third party to become decentralized, but Offchain will also develop its own.
Through the design and research of intent, Arbitrum is not limited to the interoperability of its own ecosystem, but calls on various L2s and research to come together to explore intent and reach consensus.
It is worth mentioning that two days later, the Ethereum Foundation held an online Space and brought together all the leading L2s to discuss Native/Based Rollup to expand capacity and achieve interoperability.
Then, all L2 companies stated on social media that no matter what technology stack, it is all Ethereum. Everyone expressed their loyalty and determination, vowing to get through the difficult time together.
If all L2s of Ethereum achieve interoperability, it will be like using one chain overall, which is cheap and fast. At the same time, with the update of account abstraction, Ethereum's user experience will be taken to a higher level, and the liquidity fragmentation problem will be solved, laying a solid foundation for the large-scale application explosion at that time.
Let us continue to be patient and expectant about the Ethereum ecosystem!!!
