🚨 Tsunami Warning Status

JMA initially issued a tsunami warning of 3 meters for Iwate Prefecture, parts of Hokkaido & Aomori — then downgraded it to an advisory.

The actual waves detected are far below the initial warning level. A tsunami of 0.8 meters hit Kuji Port, Iwate — and the water is still rising as the news was released.

Emergency Response

NHK has halted all regular broadcasts, presenters continue to shout: "Your life is a priority, flee to higher ground immediately!".

PM Sanae Takaichi urges citizens to evacuate to higher ground or evacuation buildings. The government is also evacuating workers from the Fukushima nuclear power plant — but no anomalies have been detected at any nuclear reactor.

Tokyo–Aomori Shinkansen services have been suspended due to power outages from the earthquake.

JMA also warns of the potential for aftershocks of similar strength in the coming week.
