China & Indonesia are sidelining the US dollar through QR code integration

Now people can seamlessly scan QR codes across China and Indonesia for retail transactions via Indonesia's QRIS system.

This move reflects Indonesia's efforts to push for transactions in local currencies and reduce reliance on the US dollar in cross-border payments.

QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is Indonesia's national QR payment standard, introduced in 2019 to unify all digital wallets and banking apps into one scanning system.

This step deepens financial cooperation and digital payment integration, boosting tourism and trade while strengthening payment connectivity in Asia.

With transactions settled directly in rupiah and yuan, Chinese tourists can now scan Indonesia's QRIS using Alipay or UnionPay.
