That communication is easy to ignore because users see blockchains as software, but every validator ultimately sits inside a data center connected by cables, routers and internet providers.

Traffic can move across dedicated high-bandwidth routes rather than depending entirely on whichever path the public internet selects between two endpoints.
As L1s increase throughput, block size and validator requirements, the amount of information those machines need to exchange grows with them.
