📜 “Philadelphia”… when Tripoli captured the largest ship in the U.S. fleet

On this day in 1803, specifically October 31, the American frigate USS Philadelphia ran aground off the coast of Tripoli while pursuing Tripolitanian ships. The entire ship was captured along with its crew of 307 sailors and soldiers, including its commander, Captain William Bainbridge.

“Philadelphia” was the largest ship in the U.S. fleet at the time. Its capture was a major shock to Washington and prompted President Thomas Jefferson to strengthen the fledgling U.S. Navy.

Later, on February 19, 1804, an American team slipped into Tripoli harbor and set fire to the ship to prevent it from being used against the Americans.

The ship’s mast still stands above the Red Castle in Tripoli to this day, a reminder of this historic incident.
