Noam Shazeer officially joins OpenAI: The father of Transformers leaves Google for the second time
Core author of the Transformer paper, Noam Shazeer, has announced his move to OpenAI. Google previously spent $2.7 billion to secure a licensing agreement with Character.AI to bring him back, but less than two years later, this 'wizard' level researcher is on the move again.
It’s reported that after expressing interest, both OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI entered the competition for his talents. Altman stated that Shazeer is one of the people he most wants to collaborate with. With this, all eight authors of the Transformer paper have now left Google, with two landing at OpenAI.
Why it matters: This is one of the most iconic events in the AI talent acquisition race since the GPT series, and Shazeer's addition will significantly boost OpenAI's R&D capabilities in infrastructure and next-gen models.
