Bishop, Martyr & Apostle of Germany
Born Wynfrith around 675 in Wessex, England, he became a Benedictine monk renowned for his learning and holiness. In 718, at the request of Pope Gregory II, he left the security of England to evangelize the pagan Germanic tribes. He felled the sacred Oak of Thor at Geismar — a bold act that led many to conversion — and organized the Church in Germany, establishing bishoprics, monasteries (including the great abbey of Fulda), and reforming clergy. Appointed Archbishop of Mainz, he worked tirelessly for orthodoxy and fidelity to Rome. On 5 June 754, while preparing to confirm new converts in Frisia, he and his companions were martyred by a band of pagans. Buried at Fulda, he is venerated as the “Apostle of Germany.”
