🇬🇧 **UK Announces Launch of First G7 Digital Sovereign Bond at the Beginning of 2027**
In a formal announcement at the Mansion House speech, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled the DIGIT (Digital Gilt Instrument) plan. This pound-denominated digital bond will be issued on HSBC’s Orion blockchain platform and operated within the Bank of England and the FCA’s digital securities sandbox—marking the first time a G7 country has moved government debt onto distributed ledger infrastructure.
Even more noteworthy, on the same day, Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, said he will support DIGIT as an eligible collateral asset for central bank market operations. This means the bond can be used in tokenized repo and central bank funding transactions, bridging the “last mile” between digital assets and traditional monetary policy.
Since the pilot began in 2024, the UK Treasury has been working to test whether blockchain can shorten settlement times and reduce reconciliation costs. HSBC has already issued more than $3.5 billion in digital bonds via Orion, showing strong technical readiness. However, this issuance will not yet be included in the routine government bond funding program; the specific size, tenor, and investor eligibility are still to be disclosed.
From the pilot to the G7’s first issuance, the tokenization of sovereign bonds is moving from concept to reality.
