⚔️15 YEARS AFTER GADDAFI'S FALL » THE U.S. AND MIDDLE EAST POWERS TRY TO UNIFY LIBYA❗

Fifteen years after the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya remains deeply divided. Now, the United States, Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar are stepping up diplomatic efforts to try to reunify the country and put an end to more than a decade of conflict between two rival governments.

Libya Remains Split Between Two Rival Administrations
The Government of National Unity (GNU), recognized by the UN and based in Tripoli, is led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. The eastern administration, based in Tobruk and backed by Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), controls oil-rich areas.

The United States, led by advisor Massad Boulos (Trump’s adviser on Arab and African affairs), is intensifying mediation. The American proposal offers an economic incentive: if the parties cooperate and form a single government, the U.S. will encourage American investment in Libyan oil fields.

The power-sharing plan provides that Dbeibah will remain prime minister and Saddam Haftar (son of Khalifa Haftar) will take the presidency. Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar are also pursuing a “Single Libya,” with recent high-level meetings. A unified national budget for 2026 has already been approved—the first in more than a decade—but there is still no single functioning government.

Unifying Libya matters to the United States mainly because of oil and control of migration flows to Europe. Regional powers, meanwhile, are trying to balance their influence in the country. After 15 years of division, violence, and economic crisis, the big question remains the same: will diplomacy this time really succeed in bringing Libya together?
