A crypto protocol is a set of rules and procedures that governs how participants interact in a decentralized network secured by cryptography. It defines how transactions are validated and how the network reaches agreement.
Protocols are not unique to cryptocurrencies. On the internet, protocols such as HTTP and HTTPS allow websites to function, and many of the largest websites run on one of these standards. Crypto protocols apply the same idea to money and value, replacing the need for a central operator with code that anyone with the right equipment can run.
