The situation around the Strait of Hormuz is rapidly becoming one of the biggest drivers of global market stress, and recent developments show just how fragile things remain. Despite Donald Trump announcing “Project Freedom” to guide ships through the chokepoint, markets are clearly signaling a lack of confidence. Oil prices didn’t fall—instead, they surged above $100 per barrel, reflecting fears that the plan won’t meaningfully restore energy flows. At its core, Project Freedom is limited in scope. While it involves over 100 aircraft and around 15,000 personnel, it is not a full military escort operation. That distinction matters. Without direct protection, tanker operators remain exposed to risks like mines, drone attacks, and seizures. The maritime industry, already shaken by recent attacks and instability, is hesitant to resume normal shipping activity through the strait. Tensions are also escalating on the geopolitical front. Iranian officials have criticized the operation as a violation of the ceasefire, and renewed clashes—including attacks on vessels and energy infrastructure—are reinforcing the sense that the truce is unstable. Incidents like explosions on ships and damage to facilities in the UAE highlight that the region is still far from secure, making any quick resolution unlikely. Markets are reacting accordingly. Both Brent and WTI crude have climbed sharply, with Brent reaching around $114 and WTI pushing past $105. Gasoline futures are also rising, pointing toward higher consumer prices, potentially approaching $5 per gallon in the U.S. This reflects a broader concern: even small disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz can choke off a significant portion of global oil supply.
