Does a Bitcoin dominance of 59.169943199637% mean altcoins are losing?

What this is about: Today's headline number is Bitcoin dominance: 59.169943199637% of the total crypto market cap, as of the 2026-10-02 morning capture. Most readers take a figure like that as a scoreboard. It is a ratio, and a ratio can mislead.

What the number actually measures
• Total market cap: $2,934,353,080,803, up 2.090909% in 24 hours
• BTC: $86,521, up 3.14121% in 24 hours and 1.5482% over 7 days
• ETH: up 1.55983%, XRP up 1.54361%, BNB up 1.8262%
• SOL: up 3.19512%, slightly ahead of BTC

Two readings that are both alive: The first reading: Bitcoin is leading a risk-on bounce, and ETH, XRP and BNB are following more slowly. The whole market rose by 2.090909%, less than Bitcoin's 3.14121%, which fits that story. The second reading: the gap is partly arithmetic.

One more thing in the data: Bitcoin's 3.14121% gain over 24 hours is larger than its 1.5482% gain over 7 days. So the earlier days of the week netted out lower, and today's move is partly a recovery. A single day's number looks more dramatic when it follows a soft stretch.

The line to keep: A high dominance number tells you where the market cap sits, not which way money is moving.
