" Hôtel de Ville de Limoges : Burned in October 17, 2026 Riots
" The Limoges City Hall (Hôtel de Ville), one of Central France's most iconic historical landmarks, suffered severe damage from a massive fire on Saturday night, October 17, 2026. This tragic incident occurred amidst a wave of nationwide protests sweeping France over the rising cost of living.
According to French media reports and eyewitness accounts, at the conclusion of a day of demonstrations, a group of people with covered faces attacked the City Hall. The attackers initially set fire to municipal and national police vehicles parked outside, then smashed windows and forced their way inside the building. Fire was then started on the ground floor and quickly spread to one of the building's wings, before eventually engulfing the roof.
The inferno ultimately caused the iconic 43-meter clock tower, which had stood for 143 years, to collapse. Hundreds of people gathered outside the building to watch the fire with shock and sadness. Firefighters fought hard to contain the blaze and save other parts of this historical building.
French Interior Minister Laurent Núñez confirmed that the fire was deliberate and occurred within the context of protest-related disturbances. The Mayor of Limoges and the Prefect of Haute-Vienne described the damage as "very heavy" and much of the building "lost." Authorities strongly condemned the violence and stated that the attackers were methodical in their actions.
This event is a devastating loss for the architectural and historical heritage of Limoges. The Neo-Renaissance building, inaugurated in 1883, was a symbol of civic pride. The final extent of the damage and the feasibility of restoration will be determined by experts once emergency repair work is completed !
