U.S. public debt may exceed $40T this week, sooner than previously forecast by a few months.
According to data from the U.S. Treasury, total debt has reached $39.9T and continues to rise.
Previously, the CBO had projected that debt in the current fiscal year would reach about $39.4T.
Notably, the current legal debt limit is set at $41.1T.
That means the gap from $39.9T โ $41.1T is now only about $1.2T.
I find this figure more striking than the $40T milestone itself: if borrowing rates keep accelerating, the debt ceiling could become an issue earlier than expected.
