Tether Pushes Back: CEO Slams S&P’s USDT Risk Rating Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino strongly rejected S&P Global Ratings’ downgrade of USDT, calling the assessment “reprehensible” and asserting that conventional finance misinterprets Tether’s approach. S&P cited high-risk reserve assets and disclosure gaps as reasons for lowering USDT’s peg stability score to a poor five. The agency noted Bitcoin makes up 5.6% of USDT reserves, exceeding its 3.9% overcollateralization buffer, warning that volatility could leave USDT undercollateralized. Most reserves, however, remain in short-term US Treasuries and cash equivalents, though transparency concerns persist. S&P suggested the rating could improve if Tether reduced high-risk assets and increased reserve transparency. Ardoino fired back, stating that Tether’s overcapitalized model defies traditional finance and its profitability threatens the status quo.
