Grayscale’s plan to list a Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca is the first real attempt to push a privacy coin into one of the most heavily monitored environments in global finance. It raises a simple but uncomfortable question: can privacy survive inside an ETF wrapper built entirely on disclosures, identity checks, and regulated custody? The timing is no accident. After drifting quietly between 40 and 55 dollars for most of the year, ZEC exploded to nearly 700 dollars in November, turning a dormant asset into one of 2025’s top performers. Institutions suddenly care about privacy again, but they want exposure without touching anything resembling a shielded transaction. That is exactly what Grayscale’s structure delivers. The ETF uses cash creations, meaning APs send dollars, not ZEC. Grayscale then buys coins on the market and stores them with Coinbase Custody. This neatly sidesteps the problem of shielded transfers, because nothing entering the ETF touches Zcash’s privacy layer at all. Even if in-kind creations are approved later, APs will almost certainly rely on transparent addresses. Shielded transfers introduce audit and sanctions-screening problems that traditional desks cannot handle. In practice, the ETF will operate entirely on transparent ZEC, even though Zcash was designed to give users optional privacy. The result is a paradox. The ETF does not enable private usage; it enables speculation on the idea of privacy. Institutions get compliance-safe exposure to a privacy-themed asset, while ZEC’s core privacy features remain on the sidelines. Yet this may be how privacy becomes investable. Not through shielded pools, but through a regulated vehicle that prices confidentiality as a long-term theme—even if it can’t practice it.
