In the saying of Allah: ﴿Allah erases usury and increases charities﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 276), Allah chose a profound and precise term that carries linguistic, spiritual, and economic depths simultaneously.
🔹 The linguistic meaning:
The word "erases" originally means complete removal, continuous decrease, and the obliteration of blessing and goodness. This means that Allah does not just eliminate apparent profit, but erases its blessing and effect, even if the money seems abundant.
🔹 The interpretation of scholars:
Ibn Kathir said: Allah annihilates usury, meaning He removes its blessing, and it may destroy it from the hand of its owner.
And Al-Qurtubi said: Its meaning is that the wealth of usury does not grow nor is it blessed, but it becomes a burden on its owner in this world and the Hereafter.
As for Al-Tabari, he explained it as “decreases,” because the apparent increase of usury is growth, but in reality, it is a decrease and annihilation.
🔹 The secret in choosing the word:
Allah did not say “nullify” or “remove,” but He said “annihilate,” because annihilation encompasses all meanings of the gradual departure of goodness: the loss of wealth, the disappearance of blessings, the misery of the soul, the tightness of provision, and the annihilation of faith and well-being.
On the other hand, it was said: “And the charities grow” — meaning He increases them and blesses them, to contrast the destruction of usury and the increase of charity in a magnificent scene of divine justice.
🔹 The summary:
One of the greatest lessons of the verse is that usury is not profit, but a path to the annihilation of wealth, blessings, and faith.
But every dirham from haram, even if it seems large, its fate is annihilation.
Every dirham from halal, even if it is small, Allah will nurture it and bless it. 🌿
