Before the release of version 30, Bitcoin Core developers changed the direction of OP_RETURN configurability, retaining the manual adjustment option for datacarriersize in response to protests from Knots node operators. Although the upgrade still increases the default limit from 80 bytes per output to nearly 4MB, PR #33453 indefinitely retains the user configurability that was initially planned for removal, representing a compromise made in the ongoing debate about storing non-transactional data on the Bitcoin blockchain.
