Three leading automakers — Toyota, BYD, and Yamaha — have begun accepting payments in stablecoin $USDT in Bolivia, marking a significant step for cryptocurrencies in the region. This was announced on September 21, 2025, by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, calling USDT the "digital dollar" for developing countries. This step was also confirmed by BitGo, noting the first purchase by Toyota with USDT.

The introduction of USDT is linked to the economic crisis in Bolivia, where currency reserves have fallen by 98% — from $12.7 billion in 2014 to $171 million in August 2025. After the ban on cryptocurrencies was lifted in June 2024, the volume of crypto transactions in the country increased by 630%, reaching $294 million in the first half of 2025. USDT has become an alternative to the US dollar, helping to circumvent the currency shortage.

Dealer centers promote USDT as a 'simple, fast, and secure' payment method. BitGo provides custodial solutions for secure transactions. This move reflects a global trend of using stablecoins in countries with unstable economies, which could serve as an example for other markets.
