U.S. stocks closed lower at the end of trading on Monday, as the indices moved downward, with losses recorded in the health services, public institutions, and industries sectors.
At the end of trading in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.77%, while the S&P 500 index dropped by about 0.43% and the Nasdaq Composite index declined by about 0.22%.
Among the leading stocks today in the Dow Jones Industrial Average was Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), whose value rose by 1.03% or 1.83 points and reached a price of 179.82 at the close. Conversely, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) continued its rise at 1.01% or 0.79 points and closed at a price of 79.17, while Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) lost 0.04% or 0.07 points at a price of 158.11 at the end of the session.
As for the weakest performance at the end of today's trading, Merck & Co (NYSE:MRK) stock closed down by 2.36% or 2.06 points, trading at levels of 85.31 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) stock fell by 1.81% or 2.87 points at a price of 155.85, while Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) stock closed down by 1.79% or 5.25 points at a price of 288.47.
On the other hand, the best performance in the S&P 500 index was recorded by Deckers Outdoor Corp (NYSE:DECK), which rose by 3.60% at a price of 113.03, Wynn Resorts Ltd (NASDAQ:WYNN) also continued its rise at 3.57% and closed at levels of 118.39, and APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) climbed about 3.33% and ended its trading at a price of 22.36.
Among the weakest performing stocks today, we mention Keurig Dr Pepper Inc (NASDAQ:KDP), which fell by 11.50% and closed its session at a price of 31.10, DexCom (NASDAQ:DXCM), which lost 7.70% at a price of 75.93, and Moderna Biotech (NASDAQ:MRNA), which weakened by 6.49% and ended at a price of 25.36 in today's stock session.
On the other hand, the best performance in the Nasdaq Composite Index was recorded by Inno Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:INHD), which rose by 247.80% at a price of 4.73. ESSA Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EPIX) also continued its rise at 227.45% and closed at levels of 0.78, and OSR Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:OSRH) climbed about 93.82% and ended its trading at a price of 1.01.
Among the weakest performing stocks today, we mention EpicQuest Education Group International Ltd (NASDAQ:EEIQ), which fell by 40.32% and closed its session at a price of 0.74, ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV), which lost 37.36% at a price of 0.67, and Top KingWin Ltd (NASDAQ:WAI), which weakened by 22.99% and ended at a price of 0.14 in today's stock session.
The number of declining stocks exceeded the number of stocks that closed higher in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1841 versus 904, while 92 remained unchanged. In the Nasdaq exchange, 2225 of the stocks declined and 1104 strengthened their positions, while 151 of the stocks maintained their value.
Wynn Resorts Ltd (NASDAQ:WYNN) climbed to its highest record in 3 years, rising by 3.57% or 4.08 points at a price of 118.39. ESSA Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EPIX) climbed to its lowest record, rising by 227.45% or 0.54 points at a price of 0.78. Top KingWin Ltd (NASDAQ:WAI) fell to its lowest record ever, losing 22.99% or 0.04 points at a price of 0.14.
The VIX index, which measures the implied standard deviation of options on the S&P 500 index, traded up by 4.01% and closed at a price of 14.79.
Futures contracts for gold for December delivery fell by 0.25% or 8.50 and closed at a price of $3,410.00 per ounce. Regarding the trading of other commodities, WTI crude oil futures for October delivery rose by 1.70% or 1.08 and reached a price of $64.74 per barrel, while the November contract for Brent oil recorded an increase of 1.41% or 0.95 points, closing at $68.17 per barrel.
The EUR/USD pair lost 0.82% and traded at levels of 1.16, while the USD/JPY pair continued its rise by 0.54% reaching levels of 147.74.
Dollar index futures traded up by 0.74% at a level of 98.32.
