A judicial commission denied parole to Erik Menéndez on Thursday, a man imprisoned for murdering his parents in 1989, in one of the most publicized crimes in the history of this country, and this Friday the agency must evaluate the request of his brother Lyle, an accomplice in the homicide.

Erik, 54 years old, "was denied parole for (a period of) three years" at the hearing, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation commission.

The decision represents a blow to the claims of his family and friends, who are also supported by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, in a movement that has grown in recent years fueled by a series and a documentary, Netflix hits last year.

The media-savvy brothers claimed sexual abuse by their father in justification of the crime, in one of the first trials broadcast on television in the United States.

After more than three decades imprisoned with a life sentence without the possibility of parole, the brothers achieved a significant legal victory in May, when U.S. justice eased the terms of their sentence.

This gave them the right to request parole, if they demonstrate that they regret it and that they do not pose a danger to society.
