Chen Mei-hui (Miffy), the chief blockchain financial crime investigator at XREX, tragically died in a car accident on National Highway last December. Due to her long-term assistance to the police in investigating money laundering and fraud cases, there was speculation that the accident had 'other implications'. The Hsinchu District Prosecutor's Office investigated and confirmed that the case was a 'pure traffic accident'; recently, the Hsinchu District Court ruled that the driver surnamed Hsu was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for 'negligent homicide'.
Chen Mei-hui was a leading blockchain investigation expert in Taiwan, long assisting the police in investigating money laundering and fraud cases, successfully tracking illegal financial flows and freezing illicit assets. The cases she was involved in during her lifetime included the sensational '88 Club money laundering case', the tracking of illegal financial flows from 'Creative Private Room', and the money laundering methods of 'money laundering godfather' Tu Cheng-wen.
Before the car accident occurred, Chen Mei-hui was interrogated due to her involvement in the Taichung District Prosecutor's Office 'leakage case', and later took an Uber back north with her boyfriend surnamed Hsieh, who works for the Criminal Investigation Bureau. While passing the 77.7 km mark on National Highway No. 1 northbound, the traffic ahead was congested due to an accident, and the Uber they were in was forced to stop in the inner lane.
Unexpectedly, less than an hour later, a 40-year-old driver surnamed Hsu, engaged in airport pickups, drove his SUV at high speed. Due to the curve obstructing his view and not reducing speed, he directly crashed into the Uber ahead. The strong impact crushed the rear of the vehicle, causing Chen Mei-hui in the back seat to suffer fractures to her chest and thigh, along with abdominal bleeding, and she was sent to the hospital but did not survive; the vehicle also collided with 4 cars ahead, injuring another 3 people.
Investigations revealed that Mr. Hsu's vehicle's engine and brake system were both functioning normally. However, at the time of the accident, Mr. Hsu did not apply the brakes, and the brake lights did not turn on. The EyeSight assistance system could also operate normally but was in the off state.
ETC traffic records also corroborate that the driver surnamed Hsu was traveling at a speed of about 106 to 108 km/h before the accident, while the speed limit on the road section was 100 km/h. The judge determined that Mr. Hsu was speeding both before and at the time of the accident.
The judge pointed out that Mr. Hsu, as a professional taxi driver, should have maintained a high level of vigilance at all times. However, he did not slow down as warned, resulting in a tragedy that caused 1 death and 3 injuries. Moreover, Mr. Hsu has yet to reach a settlement with Chen Mei-hui's family, nor has he compensated the other 3 injured parties. Nevertheless, he has admitted to the crime from the beginning and has no prior criminal record, ultimately being sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for negligent homicide. The entire case is still subject to appeal.
