Chinese missile defense system HQ-29 - "Dual-barrel Satellite Hunter" emerges in new images.
Beijing, August 16, 2025 - Newly circulated images on Chinese social media provide the first clear look at what analysts believe to be the new HQ-29 missile defense system of the People's Liberation Army. The images, later published by a defense blog, show a hexapod transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) carrying two unusually large missile containers, each estimated to have a diameter of 1.5 meters, indicating a next-generation interception system.
If confirmed, the HQ-29 system will represent a significant step forward in China's layered air and missile defense architecture. This system is believed to fill the operational gap between the HQ-19 system, which rivals the U.S. THAAD system, and the low-altitude HQ-9 series. Analysts suggest that the role of the HQ-29 system will be mid-course interception, engaging ballistic missiles as they fly outside the atmosphere, while providing anti-satellite (ASAT) capabilities.
Some military experts have compared the interceptor system to the U.S. Navy's -3 system and the Russian S-500 "Prometey," both designed to engage ballistic missiles and satellites.
