Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday to establish "peace through strength" against Russia.
Using the language of the U.S. president himself and ahead of a high-level meeting at the White House, Zelensky stated that "Russia can only be forced to achieve peace through strength, and President Trump has that strength."
"We have to do everything correctly for peace to be established," Zelensky wrote on X. "When we talk about peace for one country in Europe, it means peace for all of Europe," he added.
Zelensky met at the Ukrainian embassy in Washington with European leaders who came to show support, and will later meet jointly with Trump.
Trump, after a meeting in Alaska on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been pressuring Ukraine to cede territory to end Moscow's invasion.
Trump dismissed the idea of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and thus aligned himself with Putin's position, although U.S. officials and Western leaders claim they are seeking other ways to ensure Ukraine's security.
