U.S. military reinforcement in Latin America raises concern in Brasília
The Brazilian government is cautiously monitoring the decision by the United States to strengthen its military presence in the Southern Caribbean Sea. The operation, announced by President Donald Trump, involves the deployment of warships, submarines, and aircraft to operate under the command of Southcom, responsible for American operations in the region.
According to defense sources cited by international media, the deployment includes the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, in addition to a nuclear submarine and destroyers.
The declared goal by Washington is to combat drug trafficking organizations in Latin America, but analysts also point to direct pressure on the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.
The move comes days after Trump announced a $50 million increase in the reward for information leading to the capture of Maduro, who is accused by the U.S. Department of Justice of involvement in drug trafficking.
The Venezuelan president responded by calling the initiative an “imperialist threat” and warned that any attack could mean “the end of the American empire.”
In Brasília, the initial reading is that the military deployment raises concern “under any circumstance,” according to advisors to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as reported by the BBC. Although the Mexican government, led by Claudia Sheinbaum, has minimized the risk of direct intervention since it occurs in international waters, Brazilian diplomatic sources are monitoring the progress of the operation.
