Rubio said that day in a broadcast on ABC that the meeting between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin in Alaska had indeed made progress, having identified potential points of consensus, which would be enough to advance consultations with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders. But he emphasized that there is still "a long way to go" before reaching a true ceasefire or peace protocol. Rubio stated that the United States would not give up pushing for talks, but achieving peace still required patience and long-term efforts. He also said that any protocol must involve Ukraine's participation, and that the nature of the negotiations was that both sides must make concessions; to end the conflict, both Russia and Ukraine must accept the reality: neither side can get what it wants.
