Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are using artificial intelligence to create new antibiotics capable of combating challenging resistant bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
With the help of generative AI, the team has developed over 36 million potential compounds and explored their antimicrobial properties.
Professor James Collins, the senior author of the study, noted that AI opens new possibilities in drug development, allowing for the exploration of a significantly broader 'chemical space' that is inaccessible by traditional methods.
