According to BlockBeats, OpenAI's o3 model emerged victorious in the AI Chess Exhibition Tournament, defeating xAI's Grok 4 to claim the championship. The event, hosted on Google's Kaggle platform, featured eight AI models competing over a three-day elimination round.
The competition required AI models to play chess without any specialized training, relying solely on chess knowledge acquired from the internet prior to the event. In the final match, OpenAI's o3 secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Grok 4. Notably, o3 maintained a consistent 4-0 scoreline throughout the tournament, including a sweep against its counterpart, o4 mini, in the semifinals.
Earlier this year, in another tournament organized by chess master Levy Rozman, both Grok and ChatGPT were defeated by Stockfish, an AI system specifically designed for chess.
