Tensions between US President Donald Trump and Fed Chair Jerome Powell are intensifying. After July inflation data came in lower than feared, Trump renewed calls for an immediate rate cut — and even threatened a lawsuit over what he called Powell’s “egregious” mismanagement of the Fed’s $3B building renovations.

Meanwhile, WSJ’s Nick Timiraos, dubbed the “Fed spokesperson,” said today’s CPI figures keep hopes for a September rate cut alive. While inflation wasn’t zero, it wasn’t high enough to derail the Fed from possibly cutting rates by 25 basis points next month.
