Nvidia H20 chips, designed specifically for China, have been labeled by the country's state media as unsafe and harmful to the environment.
Despite Nvidia's claims of no 'backdoor' or other security threats in its products, the company continues to face criticism and scrutiny from countries with heightened defense requirements.
Chinese state media sharply criticized Nvidia H20 chips with artificial intelligence, calling them unsafe, technologically unimpressive, and environmentally unfriendly.
In an article published on Sunday on WeChat, Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account associated with the state television company CCTV, stated that the H20 chips pose a security threat, including the possibility of 'remote shutdown' via a hardware 'backdoor'.
Prior to the latest publication, the Chinese cyberspace regulator and 'Renmin Ribao', another influential state media outlet, also expressed concern and criticism.
"When the type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe, we, as consumers, certainly have the right not to buy it," said the article by Yuyuan Tantian.
Nvidia has repeatedly denied the presence of backdoors or any similar mechanisms for remote access or hidden control in its products. The American chip giant developed the H20 chips specifically for Chinese consumers in response to U.S. export restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence chips imposed at the end of 2023.
The Trump administration banned the sale of H20 chips in April 2025 due to escalating trade tensions but reversed this decision in July.
On July 31, the Chinese cyberspace administration announced it summoned Nvidia to discuss potential security risks associated with backdoors. The administration demanded clarifications from Nvidia regarding the existence of such vulnerabilities.
Shortly after that, the 'Renmin Ribao' newspaper called on Nvidia to provide 'convincing evidence of safety' to restore market trust and dispel concerns of Chinese users.
According to reports received earlier today, China is demanding that the U.S. ease restrictions on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. These chips are key components for artificial intelligence applications that work with large amounts of data, and the restrictions will be eased as part of a potential trade agreement ahead of a possible summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations told FT that Chinese officials conveyed this request to interested parties in Washington.
Reports claim that Beijing is concerned that American restrictions hinder Chinese tech companies, including Huawei, from producing their own artificial intelligence chips.
The White House, the U.S. State Department, and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the report.
Successive U.S. administrations have strictly controlled the export of advanced chips to China on national security and strategic competition grounds. These measures aim to slow Beijing's progress in AI and defense technology development, as well as to limit China's access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
Although these restrictions prevent American chip manufacturers from fully meeting the high demand in China, despite China being one of the largest semiconductor markets in the world, this country remains an important source of revenue for American semiconductor companies.
