🇨🇴⚠️ PETRO DENOUNCES THAT PERU TOOK COLOMBIAN TERRITORY AND WARNS: "WE WILL DEFEND OUR SOVEREIGNTY"

Gustavo Petro accused the Peruvian government of "occupying" Colombian territory in the Amazon, specifically islands that appeared north of the deepest line of the river. According to the president, Peru violated the Rio de Janeiro Protocol of 1934 that ended the war between the two countries.

📍 The conflict is centered on Santa Rosa Island, near Leticia at the triple border with Brazil. Petro denounced that Peru "just appropriated them by law and placed the capital of a municipality on land that, according to the treaty, must belong to Colombia." The island is home to 3,000 people engaged in trade.

As a symbolic response, Petro moved the commemoration of National Army Day (Battle of Boyacá) from Bogotá to Leticia on August 7th. "The commemoration of national independence is moved to Leticia," he announced, sending a clear message about territorial sovereignty.

💼 The president warned that this Peruvian action "could make Leticia disappear as an Amazonian port by taking away its commercial life." Leticia is crucial for Colombian trade in the Amazon region, and any border change would affect its economy.

Petro assured that he will use "first and foremost diplomatic steps to defend national sovereignty," but the tone of his statements and the military transfer to the area suggest that Colombia will not yield. The conflict revives historical tensions over control of the strategic Amazon River.
